CAJUN PROVERB OF THE MONTH:
“One thing you can give and still keep…is your word.“
From Dana D:
Hi Folks..well, the Zydeco Flames sure sounded great last week..As usual, there was a good crowd, w/lots of new people coming, and many regulars were there as well..The Flames always put a good show on and the vibe was quite cool..The dance lesson was very good, as I taught the “Zydeco Bounce” at the Beginning and lots of new people got it..we did a two-step lesson, and lots of people got it..We also taught the ‘Wobble” during the Break, and It was going on..I really love the dance and you always see lots of people smiling when it is playing..So thanks to all who came..the Flames will be back on April 13th..
Speaking of Dances, we ARE NOT HAVING A DANCE THIS FRIDAY MARCH 9th..We should be painting the foyer in the next couple of days, but we’ll see..we have a few other things to get right..as you know, we’ve not had hot water the last week..well, a transformer blew out on the Island and also took our hot water heater w/it..So we are getting a new one, and we also are going to put in some new lines that go to different outlets..So thanks for understand..
Don’t forget that Tom Rigney and Flambeau are coming back next week on March 16th..many, many people have asked when he is coming back, well here you go..Plus, they will be back on Friday, April 27th..For those who love to Waltz, and have some room for it, these dances are for you..
Lisas Basic Class is going on Tonight at the Beat 2560 9th in Berkeley..it’s on at 8:30, and goes till about 10pm..Lisa does a lot of wonderful stuff like leads and follows, turns, different rhythms on the Zydeco Count, some cool hand moves as wel..All of us could use a lot of brushing up on their moves..I really like the class as there are never enough ways to do the Basic step..I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I’m still coming up w/new ways of doing it..There is much more to the Zydeco Two Step than what a lot of people do now…Many people in the Basic Class know the Floating Slide for instance, where many folks in the scene don’t’..I have lots of people tell me their style is getting stale, where, here you go, The perfect place to learn, then you can go practice at the Ashkenaz after to a live band..I can’t speak enough of it..
As usual, my Wednesday Night Intermediate Class was great last Wednesday. we worked on more of the same stuff we did this past month..I have to say the class is really coming along..it was great to go through some moves in front of the mirror, showing where the weight is, body position in relation to your partner, etc..it was a nice class, and it’s always nice to see Arlene, Alex, Big Don, Ed, Robert, Anita, Darlene, Bruce, Yoshi, Karen and Sharon and Lisa..These folks are some of the best dancers in the scene in my humble opinion as they take the time to learn how to move…See you Wednesday..
Oh, and wanted to thank both Sharon and Yoshi for their one year anniversary of dancing in our Scene..They both started as novices and now are pretty good, are in the Wednesday class adding a lot to it, so I just wanted to say thanks to both..Who knows, Yoshi, maybe when you back to Japan, you can get folks there to get the Zydeco Beat going?
I’m also doing a special Sunday show w/Andre on March 18th..Lots of folks ask about it, and we do it every so often..So here’s one for ya..It’s a special benefit for Eagles Charities, specifically the Cancer Fund that we sponsor..I’ve had many people in my family die because of Cancer, most notably Lung Cancer, as they all smoked on my mothers side..She died, as did my Grandfather and many uncles and aunts..so I’m the sponsor of this..It’s going to be a potluck, and $10 donation(but you can give more), and the music will start around 4pm..Andre is doing this as a favor for us, so come down and help us have a good time..if you can’t make it, I’ll be glad to take donations at any dance as all the proceeds go to the Fund..Thanks..AND, we will be celebrating Jason Thierry’s birthday as well..So Andre, Jason, Zydeco Magic, a wonderful benefit, the Eagles Hall, yours truly, Lisa L. lots of room to move, what more could people want? See you there..
Thanks for all the support and remember to keep on dancing..
Dana D.

From Carole O:
Hey, generous volunteers and BTSC board members,
I will out of town teaching for the March dance so I need your help. With the membership year ended as of Feb., many dancers will want to renew their BTSC memberships at this dance (how’s that for optimism?). We need to have someone helping Renee out at our membership table through most of the night.
We have 3 shifts still needing coverage. Can we get your smiling face there to greet folks as they come in, offer them membership info, and collect their membership payment and form? It is usually a very easy job, and quite a bit of fun. Maryann will have all the materials that you need with her, and I have attached a little cheat sheet that you might want to print out to have with you to remember the details.
Please respond back by Th. eve which shift you’d be willing to take or if you are unavailable.

6:30-7- Barb Dwyer
7-7:30- Margaret Sohen
7:30-8
8-8:30 – Jan Maxted

Thanks so much for helping out if you can.

From Garry T:
My Couzahns,
I am very happy to say that the Second Line Mardi Gras Parade in the Gaslamp Quarter was a very
successful “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler”! We all had a “Good Time”. One BIG thank you to everyone
who participated. The BTSC’s success is all about people volunteering to make it all happen. One BIG
shout out to these very special people:
Patrick Dalcour who did an outstanding job constructing our wonderful Gator by the Bay Trailer Float and
driving it! Thank you Patrick for all your good work! Sue Schiele for helping with the Evites and the
participant master list and for being our Crawfish mascot. A tremendous help in organizing the event!
Another tremendous help was Peter Oliver for providing his experience and overall guidance of the event.
Also a big thank you to Roxanne Oliver for helping out while on the trailer. Another big thank you to
Carole Osborne for distribution of the Mardi Gras Beads (and her instant acquisition of more beads ;-)), Jim
Hance for his creative website posting and very clever “Bon Temps Occupy” flyer, Phil Piscopo for being
our Gator Mascot, and Maryann Blinkhorn for her Gator Mascot coaching. Lastly, thank you to Peter
Oliver, Greg Benusa, and Margaret Sohn for their assistance in composing our music playlist.
A special thanks to Angelyn and the Broadway San Diego Krewe for joining us and helping us to promote
GBB. Also Erin from McFarlane Productions for working so well with us.
A “Final Big Thank You” to Gator by the Bay for providing additional beads, and our President Al Gardner
for sanctioning the event and…… the BTSC Krewe for your attendance, making it all possible!
With peace, love, and ZENdeco,
Garry

I thought the Club might be interested in this article about a museum’s Mardi Gras memorabilia collection going on the auction block tomorrow. Who knows.. there might be some fabulous decorations for Gator by the Bay!

Hi Brad-
Just wanted to let you and your subscribers know about my internet
“radio” station. I’m playing a pretty wide variety of “roots” music,
including Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, Country, Hawaiian, Celtic, Reggae, &
Tex-Mex. I will attempt to change the playlists weekly so that
listeners don’t get bored. If any of your subscribers have any
constructive input or suggestions for other artists, they can contact me
through my station page. Also, if any of the artists on your list would
like to submit music to be played, they can contact me through the
station page. I will take all submissions under consideration, and if I
think it fits, I will play it. It is free to listen, or listeners can
sign up for an ad-free VIP membership.

WATERFRONT BLUES FEST will be July 4-5-6-7-8 . Cajun & Zydeco music will occur Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. The final schedule will come out soon. Again this year, a contribution of $120 will provide you with a 5-day multiple entry pass into the festival, even if the fire marshal closes the gates due to overcrowding. Your pass contribution will be tax deductible, and supports zydeco music & bands, the dance floor & Cascade Zydeco booth. Because of the wonderful response last year, zydeco will be spread over three days this year, with Cajun music spread over two days. Make your check out to “Oregon Food Bank,” and send it Dick Brainard, 813 SW Alder St. #700, Portland, OR 97205, or you can give it to Dick on Wednesday nights at the PPAA Hall zydeco cd dances.
If you plan to attend the Waterfront Blues Fest in Portland, July 4-5-6-7-8, and are considering staying in the Ondine Dorm at PSU (12-15 minutes walk to the fest), check it out at http://www.pdx.edu/confrences/summer-accommodations . To book a room there for $40/night, you must call 503-725-4370.
If wanting to stay at the Downtown Value Inn (6-7 minutes to the fest), you must call 503-226-4751 & ask for Franky. The rooms are clean, but the bath sinks have no counters. Corners & doors are sometimes scratched. Beds are all queens. A single queen is $71, two queens are $84. If we fill ten rooms, they will give a 10% discount. Book in the Dick Brainard block. It is a safe place, but not as upscale as typical hotels in downtown, or at the airport.
To purchase a 5-day festival entry pass, good for entry as many times each day, even when the gates are closed due to overcrowding, send a check for $120 made out to “Oregon Food Bank” to Dick Brainard, 813 SW Alder St., Portland, OR 97205. This is a tax-deductible donation. It is in support of Cajun & zydeco music at the fest, provides a dance floor & Cascade Zydeco information booth, and most importantly helps provide food for those in need.
Here is the latest Cajun-Zydeco schedule for the Waterfront Blues Fest.
Wednesday, July 4: There will be big name blues bands all day on the main stages. At nightfall, there will be a huge fireworks display over the river.
Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun: The main stages schedule is not set yet. We are still working on contracts. In addition, many of the musicians will do show & tell on the Workshop Stage. And, there will be late night cruise gigs on the river, and also in the adjacent hotel ballrooms. Keep checking http://www.waterfrontbluesfest.com
