Inspired by the Saturday morning Zydeco Breakfast in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, Simply Sharon’s Zydeco Brunch is one-of-a-kind on the West Coast. DJ Leon will be spinnin’ Zydeco tunes, folks will be cuttin’ the rug, and a mighty good time will be had by all who attend. The music and dancin’ are free, but it would be greatly appreciated if you would support Simply Sharon’s by purchasing your meal there during the event. The food’s good too! Saturday–advanced & beginner dance lessons mid-morning & after lunch. Horace Trahan plays late afternoon. More lessons early evening, followed by Andre Thierry until midnight. Sunday–re-creation of Café des Amis (Breaux Bridge, LA) morning brunch/dance with Andre Thierry. Horace Trahan plays early afternoon. Break camp & tearful goodbyes by 4 PM.
Nearby Facilities: Rhododendron (5-6 miles) with tourist facilities. Government Camp (10 miles) with tourist facilities. Timberline Lodge (WPA Historic Building) (15 miles) with tourist facilities.
For those flying into Portland: Cascade Zydeco can arrange to pick you up and return you to the airport. Bedding can be provided as well. If you are new to Oregon, it is suggested you make a true vacation of your visit by staying for a few days after the dance weekend to explore our beautiful mountains, gorge and coast. Many of you will know some folks in the Cascade Zydeco dance community & may be able to score a home stay through our homestay coordinator. Overnight hotel accommodations are available at Portland Airport (PDX) as are car rental agencies. Use your favorite website to check rates. More details to come–but first, be sure to book your flight for this awesome weekend of great zydeco.
Additional Comment: The weekend will include more dancing than in past years, but will still provide dance instruction for those desiring it–both beginning & advanced.
Erin Brandt is a well-known dance instructor now living in the Bay Area. She has her own dance studio in which she teaches a number of dance styles. She is a popular zydeco dance instructor at Gator-by-the-Bay & other California zydeco events.
Ali & Adam Grimshaw are long-time swing-lindy-waltz-zydeco dance instructors in Portland and regularly teach at local zydeco dance events.
Horace Trahan & the New Ossun Express is a highly acclaimed zydeco band which plays at zydeco festivals around the country & weekly club gigs at home. This 6-person band plays a mix of Beau Jocque, Boo Zoo Chavis, and 1950’s rock & roll to a zydeco beat. The addition of a saxophone & flute gives their music a unique danceable rhythm.
Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic plays at festivals & weekly dance events throughout California. He was a great hit at the Portland Waterfront Blues Fest last July. Andre began playing accordion at a very young age and is currently only in his twenties, as are the rest of his band members. The band provides a hard-driving danceable rhythm.
Camp Capacity: Maximum Capacity is 150, which includes cabin beds and tent camping. So it is important to get your registration in early, as we expect the weekend to sell out. We will make every effort for a gender balanced camp, so you might wish to ask someone of the opposite sex to register with you. This does not commit you to room together—only sign up together.
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN MARCH 1, 2011. Details for registration will be provided at that time.

From Dana D.
Hi folks..thanks for all the nice people who came out last week to hear Ruben Moreno play at the Hall..He sounded good, and w/Andres help put out some wonderful sounds. it was a nice night and again thanks for coming..
Andre will be there this Friday night, celebrating Jennifers and Lisas Birthdays..there may be more, as I can’t get them all..Andre has some new guys in the band that he has been working w/and they are really getting it down right..in my mind, as I’ve said, Andre is the best in terms of the Zydeco/French-Creole, even Cajun sound and it’s a big reason he’s at the Hall a lot. He’ll be on at 9pm..
Lately, have had some thoughts about the lesson before the dance and I’m going to change it around again..I’m going to do some Zydeco warmups, where I’ll show the Basic Steps, and then move on to harder ones, and just dance, get warm before the band starts playing..We might even teach a line dance or two..But I’m going to just dance for a good 30 minutes or so, and it’s going to be based on what people do in exercise classes, like Zumba, etc..that kind of thing..This will be geared toward anyone who just wants to move..that’s at 8:30, so if you come, prepare to sweat..
Also, there will be another Dance Workshop on Tuesday,March 29th over at the Beat, 2560 9th St. in Berkeley at 8:30..Right now, I’m leaning towards teaching dances and steps that aren’t taught much, such as again, THE FLOATING SLIDE, which people still have a bit of difficulty doing..it’s not hard, it just takes some practice..The BAISSE-BAS, which a lot of people have asked about doing again..TEXAS-ZYDECO SLIDE AND THE ZYDECO BOUNCE, two line dances that are pretty easy and fun to do, and lastly, THE WHISKEY RIVER JITTERBUG, a swing dance that is done in Henderson, La. at Whiskey River..It’s a nice little step, done in 6 counts, and isn’t too hard to do..Was thinking about giving all these dances about a half hour apiece to teach and learn..I”ll charge $10 bucks, and do at least 3 of them..So let me know if you are interested, and this is geared towards anyone who wants to come, not just the Intermediate Level that I”ve been doing my Waltz classes at..
Thanks again for all the nice support for all these years at the Hall, and remember to keep on dancing.I”ll post the schedule for the next couple of months in my next update..

UPCOMING CAJUN-ZYDECO EVENTS IN PORTLAND, OREGON
If you do not want to receive these infrequent reminders, please send me an email to that effect, and I will delete you.
******************
Cascade Zydeco apologizes for having to cancel the dance with Mark St. Mary last weekend. It was due to circumstances beyond last minute patching (think loss of venue). We will achieve to fulfill your expectations in the future.
*****************
Ralph Olsen is sponsoring a DJ Zydeco Hop at his place in Vancouver, Saturday, March 26 beginning at 8 PM. Address is 3919 NE 50th. Ave., 98661.
*****************
The New Iberians Zydeco-Blues Band continues it’s 1st. Friday of each month live music dance at the Hawthorne Eagles Hall at SE 50th. & Hawthorne Bl. Next dance is April 1–no foolin’. Music begins at 8:30 PM. Admission free; donations gladly accepted.
*****************
Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie will play for CZ in Portland one night between May 11 (Wed.) & May 15 (Sat.). His schedule at the International Children’s Fair in Seattle that week is being altered. Once that is rectified, he/we will be able to establish a firm date. Stay tuned-it’s not often we get one of the premier zydeco bands passing thru the Northwest.
********************
Portland Waterfront Blues Fest: This year, we will have zydeco Friday evening (3 bands), all day Saturday until 11 PM (5 bands), AND Sunday afternoon until 3 PM (2 bands). Bands include Corey Ledet Zydeco Band, TooLoose Cajun Band, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Zydeco Band, Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboys, Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble, and Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys. In addition, Jude Taylor (Curley’s father) will sing on a main stage, backed up by zydeco musicians. He has one of the sweetest blues voices I have heard–you will be dreaming as he sings–incredible!
****I am now soliciting contributions to the Oregon Food Bank in support of zydeco at the blues fest. Because we are expanding zydeco into a 3rd. day this year, we need additional monetary donations from our zydeco community. I am hopeful many of you will be able to send me checks for at least $100; if unable to meet this request, then anything less will certainly be appreciated. Remember, it all goes to feed the hungry; but the amount we raise does indicate to the festival organizers our level of commitment to the effort they provide in bringing zydeco to the fest. So, please, help out as much as possible.
All checks should be made out to the “Oregon Food Bank” and mailed, to me (Dick Brainard) at 813 SW Alder St., #700, Portland, OR 97205, or handed to me at our weekly dances at the PPAA.
And, just think–with a $100 contribution, you get to dance at 12 band gigs over three days–where else can you find this much zydeco for such incredible value!

The music may be old or new, good or bad — but for a week, the artist and album will be a mystery.
