Simi Valley Zydeco Festival Update…  from Greg Benusa

We all survived the Gator festival and the next Big festival is Simi Valley in two weeks.  Many dancers from Los Angeles and San Diego get a cheap room at Motel 6, myself and others are staying at the Grand Vista Hotel as well as other hotels in the area.   The other option is to just drive up for just the day on Saturday and drive back that night.

The big Zydeco bands of Andree Thierry and Lil Pookie Zydeco are playing as well as Grammy award winning Buckwheat Zydeco who is rare to see on the west coast.  On Saturday night after the festival there is a free Zydeco DJ dance at the Grand Vista Hotel at the Arena bar and grill which is very cool that they let all us dancers use it.  Those who want to can get a bite to eat there before the dance as well.  AJ and Myself will be spinning the tunes as well as a little lesson before the dance at 8:30pm.

Simi Valley Web Site with dance instruction added:
http://www.zydecoach.com/SimiValleyCajunFestivalLessons.htm

Hotel:

Dates – Friday May 27th, Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th…   (or just Saturday if you want to drive up Saturday and just spend one night)

Cheap – Motel 6…   this is right off the freeway and about 5 mintues from the festival.  Very inexpensive rooms and many dancers often stay there.  $70 rooms are a great price so grab them while they last !!

SIMI CAJUN & BLUES FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND!

Sat & Sun. May 28, 29, 2011

Great Lineup, Fun Weekend Ahead

Andre, Pookie and 2010 Grammy-winner Buckwheat Zydeco: a winning combination

Now in it’s 22nd year, this festival is the Simi Rotary Club’s main fundraiser for their charities, which is always a great reason to support this event. This year, dancers are also getting a great lineup that will leave folks happily tired at the end of the day on Sunday.

As the folks who run the Grammys have decided to discontinue the Cajun/Zydeco category, having Buckwheat perform will be especially meaningful, since only four artists/groups had the opportunity to win that award.

In recent years, this festival added a Blues stage with a stellar lineup of Blues performers.

Dance instruction will be provided both days on the Cajun/Zydeco stage as well as short, 10-minute dance intervals between bands on the Blues stage.

The festival is located at Rancho Suzanna Community Park, directly across the street from the Amtrak station, and next door to one of Simi Valleys shopping centers.

NOTE: DO NOT PARK IN THE SHOPPING CENTER PARKING! THEY WATCH WHERE FOLKS ARE GOING AND YOU WILL BE TOWED!!

Golden Sails Goings-On

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Lil’ Pookie June 12

Curley Taylor July 10

TWO TOP BANDS ADD SUMMER SIZZLE

Lil Pookie in June, Curley Taylor in July

As there won’t be any dances at the Golden Sails in May, be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming dances in June and July. Dances are usually** held on the Second Sunday of the month, so there is even more coming up. Watch the Gazette for details!

Lil Pookie Returns!

Lil’ Pookie & The Zydeco Sensations will be returning to the Golden Sails on June 12 for another evening of pull-out-the-stops (literally) pedal-to-the-metal fun! Returning to the west coast from his home in Louisiana for the first time this year, Pookie brings us his smooth, upbeat, HDQ (High Dance Quotient), Nouveau style. Pookie only gets out here a couple of times a year, so plan on being part of the crowd for this high-energy, fun-filled evening. CLICK HERE and listen to a sample of what you’re gonna get.

The hotel restaurant is just down the hall from the club and opens at 5 PM for dinner. Dance attendees are free to order food at the restaurant and bring it into the club.

As always, kids are welcome, so bring the whole family-the more the merrier!

Bands playing at the Golden Sails are playing for the door, so come on out and support ’em, y’all!

CURLEY TAYLOR & ZYDECO TROUBLE

GOLDEN SAILS DEBUT

I am very excited that Curley Taylor will be coming to the Golden Sails, as he hasn’t played in the Los Angeles area except at festivals. To have him in playing in an intimate venue, up close and personal is a real treat. I’m expecting a great turnout, so plan on arriving early!

Curley’s King of Smooth styling on his piano note accordion is a dancers dream. Great harmonies, throbbing bass guitar and perfect backbeat make this highly polished group of musicians more than just a band-they’re a well-oiled Zydeco machine.CLICK

Again, kids are welcome, so bring the whole family!

Hi folks..Just a quick note to thank all those who came out to hear the Zydeco Flames last Friday night at the Eagles..Sound was good, band was tight, lots of new people who showed up..The Flames do have a crowd of nice people who like to dance..They will be back on the 1st of July..

Speaking of good bands, Ruben Moreno will be w/his Zydeco Band, celebrating his new CD release..Ruben is not only a great rubboard player, but a wonderful accordion player and singer..He’ll be starting out at around 9pm, with a dance lesson at 8:30..See you there..

And speaking also of dance lessons, on Wednesday, June 1st, I’ll be doing a repeat of the Whiskey River Jitterbug workshop at the Beat, 2560 9th St. at 8:30..I’ll also be doing a few things dealing w/the Floating Slides and Lifts..this will be geared towards Intermediate Level, but if you are interested, give me a shout..thanks..

And don’t forget our Memorial Day Dance, w/Andre both playing and doing some cooking..There will be Barbeque Chicken and Ribs, along w/other things, and all for $13 bucks..Things will kick off around 3..That’s going to be on Monday Memorial Day..we used to do a Memorial Day Dance every year, but haven’t for awhile, so we hope to see you..we’ve gotten lots of requests to do a daytime thing, so here you go..

Happy Birthday to both James Smith and Wilbert McAlister, as well..Both good dancers and long time supporters of the Zydeco Dance Scene..

From Dick Brainard Portland, Oregon

Geno Delafose was a lot of fun Wednesday night. The PPAA Hall was quite full (about 150), but not like the clubs in Louisiana. I understand he was on fire at Hwy 99 Club in Seattle Thursday night. Guess I should have made the trip!

Lil’ Pookie & the Zydeco Sensations w/ Andre Thierry on bass guitar will play Saturday, June 4, in Vancouver at the Eagles Lodge. 107 E. 7th. Street. Lesson at 6:30, dance from 7:00-10:30. General admission-$15; CZ members-$13.

**********************************

A number of checks were handed to me at the dance as contributions to the OFB in support of zydeco at the WFB. Thank you to all of you who have given contributions to the Oregon Food Bank. We are currently over 75 percent to our goal of $10,000. Your help is still needed. Remember, if you make a $120 contribution, you will receive a 4-day entry pass that is good even if the fire marshal closes the gates due to overcrowding. Your contribution, in any amount, is tax deductible. Make your check to “Oregon Food Bank,” and send it to Dick Brainard at 813 SW Alder St. #700, Portland, OR 97205.

I need to submit the $120 contributions to the Food Bank the end of May, so as to get the 4-day passes, which will be sent via mail, or given out at Wednesday night cd dances.

Hi Brad-

Just wanted to let you and your subscribers know about my internet
“radio” station.   I’m playing a pretty wide variety of “roots” music,
including Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, Country, Hawaiian, Celtic, Reggae, &
Tex-Mex.  I will attempt to change the playlists weekly so that
listeners don’t get bored.  If any of your subscribers have any
constructive input or suggestions for other artists, they can contact me
through my station page.  Also, if any of the artists on your list would
like to submit music to be played, they can contact me through the
station page.  I will take all submissions under consideration, and if I
think it fits, I will play it.   It is free to listen, or listeners can
sign up for an ad-free VIP membership.
