The Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans have been dressing, masking, and celebrating since 1682. The Creole Osceola Mardi Gras Indians, led by Chief Delco, got the “Creole” portion of their name because the Chief, Clarence Dalcour, a strong supporter of the Creole Heritage Center, is from the Seventh Ward. Congratulations to zydeco/blues artist C.J. Chenier for his nomination in the Best Regional Roots Music category at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards for his latest album Can’t Sit Down! If C.J. wins, it will be a rare case of both father and son being GRAMMY winners – quite an accomplishment.

The 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards
ceremony will be held on Feb. 12, 2012 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Chenier was literally born into the musical tradition of southwest Louisiana and Texas Zydeco, a chugging, accordion-led blend of French Creole and African-derived influences. Born the son of great Zydeco king Clifton Chenier, the first GRAMMY Award winning musician of his genre, C.J. was totally immersed in R&B, funk and jazz from childhood. Despite his family ties, or maybe because of them, C.J. was not terribly interested in his father’s music as a teenager. A natural player, C.J. won a scholarship to study music at Texas Southern University and spent his college years exploring his own musical style. Coming into adulthood, C.J.’s interest in the music of his ancestors grew and after college graduation, he joined his father’s legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band. After his father’s death in 1987, C.J. assumed leadership of the band. While he continued to develop his personal accordion style, C.J. also gradually began grafting on influences from his boyhood. As C.J. explains, “I play it the way I play it. All my father really told me was to do the best I could do with my own style.” Aside from performing and recording with his own ensemble, C.J. has worked with an impressive array of collaborators, including Paul Simon and The Gin Blossoms. A self-described “road dog,” C.J. tours extensively in North America.

Praise for Can’t Sit Down:

“His vocals and accordion continue to drip with top-line Louisiana hot sauce, keeping the good times rolling with energized adaptations of blues and Creole r&b classics.”

– Downbeat, January 2012

“He’s back to party-band mode this time [but] dipping back into the unlikely covers well…without sacrificing danceability…Curtis Mayfield’s “We Gotta Have Peace” is…the best example of his band’s flair for arrangements…What it does do is kick butt.”

– OffBeat Magazine

“Can’t Sit Down is a lot of fun.”

– Songlines

“[C.J.] not only knows the music’s roots, he sees it’s future[, r]olling in a load of rock and r&b, quite seamlessly…Even if you aren’t a genre fan, this is can’t miss stuff that’s sure to grab you.”

– Midwest Record

“This music is about as real as it gets… [the] take of ‘Please Don’t Go’ would make Muddy Waters green with envy. If you wanna get out of your funk, play this a few times. Guaranteed results. ”

– Jazz Weekly

“he’s got a great, bluesy style and a knack for making zydeco modern and current…One of the big highlights of the CD comes with the Tom Waits cover ‘Clap Hands’…this album [also] contains the first zydeco cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Dusty Road” that I’ve ever heard, and it’s a kicked-back scorcher.”

CAJUN PROVERB OF THE MONTH:
“Words that soak into your heart are whispered … not yelled. ”

From Dana D:

Hi Everyone..sorry this is a bit late, but have been recovering from a very nasty cold bug that I got about a week ago..Wanted to thank all those who came out to hear Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic last Friday after Thanksgiving..was a nice night, and lots of folks showed up, again with lots of new people who came out..Andre really wowed them and many may have caught the Zydeco Bug, a bug that we all have..a great thing indeed..He just gets better and better as well..I’m always impressed by what he does, and I like all of what he does, but have to admit, that I’m really digging on the older 50s’ style Jump-Blues Zydeco that he has been putting down lately..Andre and his band really make it jump…it’s great music for Zydeco, Swing Out, Lindy, or the old Jitterbug..Man, Andre just has it going on.

Plus, when you think about the other stuff he does, (Boozoo, John Delafose, Beau Jocque,Danny Poullard) his own stuff, the whole show never repeats, and it’s a different sound every time..Andre played Cajun, French-Creole, Zydeco-Traditional Style, Zydeco-Nouveau Style, Zydeco-Jump Blues Style, plus Waltzes, Line Dances, and more..I know of no other accordion player in the genre who can do this..or will do this to please a dancing crowd..He’s just the best in my opinion and I can’t express it enough how LUCKY we are to have him here..He’ll be back on accordion on New Years Eve.

Speaking of bands coming back, lots of folks have asked w/Ruben is going to be back on the accordion instead of the great rubboard he plays..Well, you have your wish..this Friday, Dec. 2nd, he’ll be back to show you what he’s got..He’ll be having Andre on Bass, and special guest Jason Thierry on Rubboard, plus the rest of the Zydeco Magic Band..Wow, what a show..3 youngbloods up front w/the ZM rhythm section holding it down..I’m really looking forward to it..I like Rubens’ style as well. He plays a lot of the LeRoy Thomas/John Delafose style on some tunes but makes it his own, the way any artist should do, whether they be dancer, musician, writer, etc..Dance lesson at 8:30, music at 9pm.

Lisas Basic Class will resume on Tuesday the Dec. 6th, so if you know some folks who want to learn bring ’em on down..it’s a very fun class and people have gotten quite decent..we do turns, leads and follows, doing things in BOTH 6 and 8 beats, etc..all kinds of groovy things..check it out..one can never learn enough..

My Wednesday class IS ON TONIGHT, so come on down and we’ll see you there..

Lastly, We will be having our New Years Eve Party on SATURDAY DEC. 31st..We’ll be having food, champagne toast at 12, favors, etc..all for 30 bucks a head..if there are people who want a lesson, I’ll do a short one at 8:30, otherwise we’ll just do the Zydeco w/Andre and Zydeco Magic at 9pm..Lots of folks wanted it so here it is..and yes that means that there will be no dances on Friday the 23 or the 30th either..So come and have a good time..Last year was a lot of fun..This year, just as good or better..We’ll be having advanced tickets for those who need ’em, starting next week..Spread the word and we’ll see you there..

Thanks again for all the support and remember to keep on dancing..

Hello Jan,

Just want to let out the news that Pat Bean and the RB Chorale will be
performing at December Nights in Balboa Park this Saturday also. We have
been around for 37 years raising money to give music scholarships to
graduating high school students annually. We give $10,000 to $12,000 per
year. Audition forms are usually in the administrative offices of the high
schools or can be found on line at http://www.rbchorale.org. Would you kindly let
the musicians and our upcoming musicians know about this. What I am asking
is to send an email blast to all on your list. Thank you we are there for
the students!

From Dick Brainard Portland, Oregon

The Ft. Lauderdale Cajun-Zydeco Festival was great fun. It was held on the grounds of the Seminole Indian -Hard Rock Casino in Davie, FL (mostly surrounded by Ft. Lauderdale). The dance attendance was a bit sparse–probably due to this being the first year of the “new” festival. There was plenty to do besides dancing–shopping at all the stores in the mall, gambling in the casino, & good food at the festival and in the casino. There was a large covered plywood dance floor to the side of the stage. Bands included the Magnolia Sisters, Savoy Family Band, Kevin Naquin, C’est Bon, Rosie Ledet, Feufollet, Cedric Watson & Geno Delafose. Cedric and his rubboard player did an added set on a separate stage in the mall which blew me away–Creole roots music.

Bobby Rodriguez–the organizer–promises more zydeco next year, plus a dance floor right in front of the stage. I will be going.

New Year’s Weekend in Lafayette, LA will be Dec. 29-Jan. 2 this year. The 3-star Holiday Inn is giving us a discount rate of $60/night. Call 337-233-6815 and ask for the New Year’s Zydeco Group Rate to reserve. Again, any problem making your reservation, ask to speak with Ashley DeRouen. And, remember to take your Priority Club card along for half off benefits. I’m flying into N.O. on Thursday for zydeco at the Rock ‘n’ Bowl, then driving up to Lafayette for the weekend.

Geno Delafose will play the NYE dance at Vermilionville again this year. Tickets are $35. To reserve a ticket, go to

www.bayouvermilion.org/index.cfm/?load=event&event-65 , or call 337-233-4077, ext. 203, & ask for Chris.

Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band will play New Year’s Eve at Slim’s Yi Yi Ki in Opelousas about 9 PM.

Likely that Keith Frank will play at either El Sido’s, or the Zydecdo Hall of Fame in Lawtell.

L’Angelus Cajun Family Band wants to play for us at their church hall in Carencro for New Year’s Day Brunch Dance.

Roy Carrier’s Offshore Lounge in Lawtell will reopen for the 15th. annual Carrier Family Festival on New Year’s Day. Music

begins at 3 PM until we have had enough. Bands lined up so far include Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Dikki Du &

Zydeco Krewe, Dwight Carrier & the Black Cat Zydeco Ro Doggs, Corey “Lil Pop” Ledet, and Lil’ Pookie. Directions–go into

Lawtell on the one way street, turn right at the first gravel street (McClellen), go over the railroad tracks, turn left onto Perry &

go to the club.

The Buffalo Bayou Show: California’s longest running bayou show on the air.
KUCI named Orange County’s best radio station two years in a row by OC Weekly.
Former SNL member and comedian Jon Lovitz says: “It’s a snortin’ buffalo in your ear!”
Buckwheat Zydyeco, himself, says: “If you’re listening to it, don’t you ever stop”.
Mr. Mojo: “Man, I like THAT show!”
anonymous listener: “Has anyone ever seen Jake Bacon and that buffalo in the
same room together?!”
