CAJUN PROVERB OF THE MONTH:
” Never look down on anybody – unless you’re helping them

From Dana D:

Hi folks..Well, we had a good time last week hearing LeRoy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners, from Kinder La. LeRoy sure played great all night, w/his band it was a great night..W/Raymond Bilbo on Bass, Ruben Moreno on rubboard, Gerard St. Juilien on drums and Andre Thierry on guitar..Wow, the whole band sounded very, very good..Lots of people thought so, and there were lots of new people there..We always get a lot of new people every week and tis wonderful for to see them get to hear Zydeco for mostly the first time..LeRoy and his band are a great choice to get introduced to them..Was also nice to see LeRoy do a birthday as well, as we celebrated his Birthday..All in all, a nice night..Thanks again for all those who came..

And Speaking of bands that get a lot of people and are the first Zydeco Band a lot of people see, the Zydeco Flames are going to be at the Eagles Hall this Friday, Dec. 16th..The Flames have been doing it to death for over 20 years now, and still crank it up and out..The original band is back together so come on out and hear ’em..Dance lesson at 8:30, music at 9ish..See you there..

Lisas Basic Class is on for tonight Tuesday the Dec. 13th, so if you know some folks who want to learn bring ’em on down..it’s a very fun class and people have gotten quite decent..we do turns, leads and follows, doing things in BOTH 6 and 8 beats, etc..all kinds of groovy things..check it out..one can never learn enough..

We will be having our New Years Eve Party on SATURDAY DEC. 31st..We’ll be having food, champagne toast at 12, favors, etc..all for 30 bucks a head..if there are people who want a lesson, I’ll do a short one at 8:30, otherwise we’ll just do the Zydeco w/Andre and Zydeco Magic at 9pm..Lots of folks wanted it so here it is..and yes that means that there will be no dances on Friday the 23 or the 30th either..So come and have a good time..Last year was a lot of fun..This year, just as good or better..We have advanced tickets for those who want them, and they will be there this Friday….Spread the word and we’ll see you there..

Also, this will be the last Friday Dance of the year..we’ll be taking the next two weeks off, and come back for the New Years Eve gig, on Sat. Our first Friday Dance after the 16th, will be also w/the Flames..So we’ll be having them as the last Friday of the old year, and the first Friday of the new year..So again, if Fridays are your thing to do the Zydeco, we’ll see you then..

And for the folks in my Wednesday class, email me, as I’m not sure if we are going to go the next couple of weeks..Thanks..

Thanks again for all the support and remember to keep on dancing..

“OK all you SoCal zydeholics,” don’t forget Tio Leo’s is still “on” for tonight with a big tribute to one of my personal favorites, Geno Delafose. This may be his only San Diego appearance this year (via CDs, not in person). Thanks to Greg Benusa for keeping it all going for our enjoyment!

>From Ron S:
Jan,
Would you be so kind as to post this to the Bon Temps email newsletter.

Hi Fellow Zydeco-cats and Cajun Critters. Ron Santucci here. Please check this out.

Judy Bishop and I are organizing a Christmas Caroling event. Its very informal and we have to still put together the deals but the basic plan is as follow:

Everyone would meet at my house on the afternoon of December 17th. We have some music books with Christmas Carols. Over a some wine, soda
and muchies etc we will do a little casual/informal practicing then drive to some nursing or elder care facilities. It would only take a couple
of hours in total so you will have your evening free.

We have not selected the facilities yet. That’s this weeks project.

If you have not done something like this before let me assure you, you do not have to have a good voice. It will blend with the others.

Also, I did this for several years 10-15 years or so ago. Let me share just one experience. We were singing to an elderly lady [I estimated to be in her 80’s] lying in bed. Tears started streaming down her cheeks. She looked at me and said we had made her Christmas. To see such gratitude for such a little kindness was extremely, and I mean extremely, moving. I had no doubt that I was the one receiving a gift. I can guarantee it, but I would not be surprised if you have a similar experience.

Soooo … if any of you are interested please contact me at rjs911@hotmail.com or Judy Bishop.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all.

>From Carole O:
Hi, Bon Temps Socialites,
Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners, an engaging Houston-based band, and the many San Diegans who were intrigued by the club’s presentation at December nights are poised to join us tonight at the War Memorial Building. To continue the warm spirit of our December Nights extravaganza, we need your help. Because you volunteered to help out at Bon Temps Social Club activities, I am asking you to attend on Saturday with your warmest Bon Temps spirit and with a contribution to our holiday treats table. Please aim to donate munchies or drink for a minimum of 10-12 people. Cakes, cookies, candies, fruits, nuts, chips, cheeses, non-alcoholic beverages or whatever your inspiration and time allows for will add to the festivities. Let me know what you can contribute, or just bring it along with you on Saturday night.

If anyone has the equipment and willingness to setup drink for as many as 200 people, we’d love to be to offer apple cider, hot chocolate or some type of holiday drink. If you can do this, please contact me to arrange details of how the club will reimburse for the large volume of supplies this will entail.

If you can come to the dance before 6:15 or stay after 10:30, that would be a great help too as we set up and clean up after the dance.

Thanks, and once again, let’s let the good times roll!!
Aieee!!

If you attended December Nights Saturday, you may have seen the Soul Line Dance lesson Lori taught…the dance floor was packed! Now, Lori has offered to bring it to the Bon Temps Dance this Saturday. She’ll be teaching a line dance during band break that will include some new moves she picked up from AJ at the BTSC Dance Pavilion.

>From Sue:
According to this notice on Lacey J’s website, dances there seem iffy in the near future: “posted Tues [no date given]: We are still without power, and I am not sure I will be able to recover from this. The former owner may be re-opening, just not sure of the timeline at this point.” Hope they make it.
Sue

(Editor’s Note: Rich P produced this from Lacey’s [updated] Facebook page: “We should be open and back in business by tomorrow evening. The words ‘Thank You’ aren’t even close to expressing the gratitude felt.”

It would probably be a good idea to call Lacey’s to confirm that there will be an event on Sunday–and if there is, the band is fun and the dance floor is wonderful! Tim Cook’s Steelbone Bontemps Band

>From Joe K:
finally something that makes sense (to me at least)!
Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers…

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full..
The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..

The sand is everything else—the small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children.

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first—the things that really matter.

Set your priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Please share this with someone you care about. I JUST DID!

I’m starting to get the hang of it.

This would be a good link to give to people unfamiliar with Zydeco to give them an initial exposure and get them interested. [Quick Link of the above: http://bit.ly/obYYN5 ]

Let me know how you like it.

Hi Brad-

Just wanted to let you and your subscribers know about my internet
“radio” station.   I’m playing a pretty wide variety of “roots” music,
including Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, Country, Hawaiian, Celtic, Reggae, &
Tex-Mex.  I will attempt to change the playlists weekly so that
listeners don’t get bored.  If any of your subscribers have any
constructive input or suggestions for other artists, they can contact me
through my station page.  Also, if any of the artists on your list would
like to submit music to be played, they can contact me through the
station page.  I will take all submissions under consideration, and if I
think it fits, I will play it.   It is free to listen, or listeners can
sign up for an ad-free VIP membership.
