SECOND SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH!

San Diego Event

The Bon Temps Social Club of San Diego presents

LIL WAYNE AND SAME OL’ 2 STEP

Dinner (included with admission) 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Dance Lesson 6:20-7:00 p.m (Special Lesson with AJ Gibbs from Long Beach)
Open Dancing to Lil Wayne 7:00 to 10:30 p.m.

Zydeco thrives in San Diego! Yeah, you right!! Celebrating 20 years of good times to the zydeco/Cajun beat! The Bon Temps Social Club of San Diego proudly presents a Mardi Gras-themed 20th anniversary dinner-dance featuring Lil’ Wayne and Same Ol 2 Step* straight from the heart of Louisiana’s zydeco country.

Bring your joi de vive. We’ll supply the beads, the band, dinner and King Cake. Costumes optional and welcomed! Come early to enjoy a delicious Louisiana-style dinner, included with admission, until the last bowl of gumbo is gone. Free dance lesson too!

Lil’ Wayne and Same Ol’ 2 Step is a high-energy band which blends old- and new-style Zydeco. Leader of the band, Wayne Singleton, is a young but very knowledgeable musician who has been involved with zydeco music since age 7. He cut his teeth with legends such as Beau Jacques, Keith Frank and Zydeco Force. Although some artists are pushing zydeco to its progressive left; Lil Wayne and Same Ol’ Two Step keep it firmly based in the Lawtell – Opelousas, Louisiana, style where it originally sprouted. The band’s consistent and more traditionally bed-rocked style of zydeco is up-tempo and performed with an exuberance that is sure to make you dance to the point of ecstasy. Costume to add to the festive feeling if you’d like.

Admission: $15 ($12 for BTSC and KSDS Jazz 88 members). Directions: From Interstate 5 south, exit at 10th Avenue in downtown San Diego, turn left on A Street, turn left on Park Blvd., go over freeway bridge, turn left onto Presidents Way and proceed to stop sign. Park in the lot to the left serving Hall of Champions, Automotive Museum, etc. Balboa Park Club is just north of the Puppet Theater. For a map of the area, click on Balboa Park Map in the navigation panel.

A special shout-out to dancers from back in the early to mid-90s when Maryann and Peter first began spreading the love of all things Cajun and Creole to San Diego. If we haven’t seen you since Y2K, we’d love to reconnect. Bring your stories, confessions, old photos, BTSC buttons, and, of course, your dancing shoes. We have a stellar band booked and all sorts of festivities planned. Recent dancers and newbies: we welcome your fresh energy at the dance and into the club if you’d like. Laissez les bon temps rouler!!!

Hotels Situation

The week of July 4-8 the national barbershop quartet convention will be here. As a result, all good hotel rooms in the downtown area are already sold out. This includes the Marriott where I have put people in past years. Following is a summary of what is available.

***Hotel Fifty at SW Front & Morrison: I have a block of 15 rooms reserved at $159 + tax for 4 nights Thu, Fri, Sat & Sun (you have to book all 4 nights).

They have two queen beds each room. Short 4 block walk (3-4 minutes) to zydeco stage. This is now the closest available hotel to the fest. Two blocks

from a MAX Light Rail stop from the airport. Must pay for parking. This block of rooms will only be held for 2-3 months. You can reserve a room &

cancel with no penalty with a couple weeks notice. If interested in one of these rooms, contact me ASAP.

**Downtown Value Inn at SW 4th. & Montgomery next to PSU. $71 for one queen room, $85 for two queen beds. Basic, small, but clean rooms. 7 blocks

to the main festival entrance. If we fill ten rooms, you get a 10% discount. Free parking under hotel. Pizza pub on ground floor open late. Let me know if

interested in one of these rooms. Not sure how long they will hold the block.

**PSU Student Residence Halls at SW 6th. & College, about 12 blocks from the main festival entrance (10-12 minute walk). All rooms include two single

beds, full bath, towels, coffee, wifi. Basic student furniture. Clean. $40/room. $50/room with full kitchenette. Go to http://www.pdx.edu/conferences/summer-

accommodations to book a room.

***Airport Hotels. A 40 minute ride on MAX Light Rail Red Line to downtown, then five block walk to zydeco stage. Go to http://www.hotwire.com, then type

in PDX and your dates to check rates. You will want the Cascade Station Area–short walk to nearby light rail station. Currently a 3 1/2 star hotel is going

for $61 + tax. Parking is free at the hotels if you are driving to Portland. Parking in downtown near the festival is $1.50/hour at a city-owned garage.

Other garages very expensive.

CAJUN PROVERB OF THE MONTH:

One thing you can give and still keep…is your word.

From Dana D:

Wanted to thank all those who came out to hear Mark St. Mary and his band play last Friday night..it was the best I’ve heard him play in quite along time..Lots of great two-steps, some wonderful waltzes, and also cool shuffles..and both sets really cranked up..Many folks have said that it was nice to hear Mark play both sets the way he can, and he did..We also had lots of new folks, again, like we’ve been getting many months now, and they were all happy..we had a good dozen who came early, stayed late, and really were rockin’ out all night long..it was nice to see them get the Zydeco Groove going..Looks like Mark is back playing the old-time Zydeco like only he can, and he’ll be back sometime soon..and when he does, we hope to see those who have been asking me to book other bands other than Andre or the Flames show up this time and really enjoy a good band…

Was nice also to hear Andre play at a very small but nice place on Sat. night..Andre sounded very good as usual, but man was it tight..the dance area wasn’t big but it was rockin’..lots of folks were checkin’ out the dancers, and who knows, maybe some of them will even come and start doing the Zydeco..you never know..

Speaking of bands doing the Zydeco, the Zydeco Flames are making their return to the Eagles this Friday, Feb. 10th..The Flames always play good shows, they always have good crowds, and everyone is in a good mood..They’ve been doing it that way for 20 years now, and they show no sign of letting up..We’ll also be celebrating 3 Birthdays at least..Lloyd Meadows, the lead singer for the Flames, Lance Henry(get a Dance w/Lance Ladies), and Lisa Lee..We’ll be doing a Birthday Circle w/these wonderful folks and who knows? usually someone else meekly comes up and says it’s their Birthday too..we’ll see..either way, it’s going to be a great show..Dance lesson at 8:30, music at 9pm..

Also, don’t forget that Andre is playing our Mardi Gras Dance next week, Feb. 17th..we’ll be celebrating our King and Queen there, so come and see what we do..

On a sad note, had to admit that Don Cornelius’ passing was hard to hear..Don’t know about a lot of you, but Sat. afternoon was the place to be in front of the TV, watching “Soul Train”..Live acts were it, but most of us watched to catch the Soul Train Dancers, getting new moves, just seeing kids like us getting up w/the get down..Don was one of the original Macs, and he had a style that isn’t seen much anymore..Peace, Love and Soul Don..RIP..

On a bad note, have to admit that I’m not exactly thrilled to see the NY Giants as the champs of the NFL..I haven’t seen the new schedule for 2012, but hopefully my Niners will see them again, and this time kick their ass..Go Niners..

Wanted to let folks know that we are NOT HAVING A DANCE on March 9th..we are going to finally paint the place as of now..Things may change but right now we have it scheduled..

As usual, my Wednesday Night Intermediate Class was great last Wednesday. we worked on more of the same stuff we did this past month..I have to say the class is really coming along..it was great to go through some moves in front of the mirror, showing where the weight is, body position in relation to your partner, etc..it was a nice class, and was nice to see both Arlene, Alex and Big Don back..thanks all who came..See you Wednesday..

Thanks for all the support and remember to keep on dancing..

Dana D.

From Jim H (our webmaster, former BTSC Board Member and dancer):

BTW we are having another monthly Cajun house party here in St. Pete this Friday. Our dancers don’t have as many opportunities for dancing as you do in San Diego, but we have really fun parties of about 40-50 people with a live band. I am working with the local Cajun band to promote a larger dance event next month featuring Al Berard Cajun Band from the Lafayette area (featuring Lisa Brande from Vermont). We get traveling bands like Terrance Simien and BeauSoleil, but they are usually playing less dancer friendly venues. When we can get those bands into a venue like our fabulous Gulfport Casino, then we will have something. BTSC is very fortunate to have linked up with the IDA, the great venues at Balboa Park, and a half dozen good local Cajun bands. What you have done in San Diego is a good model for other communities like St. Pete.

***********************************

From Carole O:

*Lil’ Wayne and Same Ol 2 Step, are a high-energy band which blends old- and new-style Zydeco. Leader of the band, Wayne Singleton, is a young but very knowledgeable musician who has been involved with zydeco music since age 7. He cut his teeth with legends such as Beau Jacques, Keith Frank and Zydeco Force. Although some artists are pushing zydeco to its progressive left, Lil Wayne and Same Ol’ Two Step keep it firmly based in the Lawtell – Opelousas, Louisiana, style where it originally sprouted. The band’s consistent and more traditionally bed-rocked style of zydeco is up-tempo and exuberant. You are sure to want to dance to the point of ecstasy! Aiyeeee!

From Dick Brainard Portland, Oregon

I have received some questions re. the Creole Roots Band which will play at the Portland Waterfront Blues Fest over July 4th. week.

The Creole Roots Band is a creation of conversations between a number of Louisiana zydeco musicians. They had talked about playing Creole roots music in informal jam sessions on weekends at local clubs. Dexter Ardoin became the spearhead for the discussion, and told me about it at the first Roy Carrier Tribute at Slim’s on New Year’s Day a year ago. Using the Portland Waterfront Blues Fest as bait, Dexter brought a number of those interested in performing Creole roots music together with the possibility of playing at the festival this summer. A number in the group who were able to make the time commitment agreed this would be great fun. So……there you have it.

The Creole Roots Band for the 2012 Portland Waterfront Blues Fest will include Dexter Ardoin, Ed Poullard, Jeffrey Broussard, Andre Thierry & Sean Ardoin. Each will lead one set for the band during the fest. It will be like having five different zydeco bands playing for the fest–and with all-star backup of the other four members! And, for the grand finale, band members will play off each other–remember how Jeffrey Broussard & C.J. Chenier played accordions together at Rhythm & Roots a couple years ago–it blew us away!

Also, re. Corey Ledet–he will bring his own band from Louisiana–no local fill-ins. After the fest concludes for the night on Thursday, July 5, he will play a gig at the Spare Room on N.E. 42nd. Ave.–5-6 miles from downtown. We will offer rides for many of you who will need them, by having sign-up sheets for drivers and riders at the Cascade Zydeco booth.

For those needing accommodations, a few local folks have said they may be willing to provide beds. Those wanting homestays will need to provide their own transportation–ie., a car, plus reach a monetary agreement with the host. I will send out a list of potential hosts around the end of March.

As to hotels, the Hotel Fifty is about the best deal ($159/night + tax for a minimum of Th, Fr, Sa, Su nights). It is a 3-star hotel only 3 minutes from the zydeco stage, and two short blocks from the MAX light rail line from the airport. Great location for changing clothes, or napping. You need to let me know you want to reserve a room (1 or 2 queen beds), then in a month or so, I will give you a special group rate contact number for you to call to confirm your room. If you later decide to give up the room, just give the hotel a call to cancel the reservation.

The fest begins on Wednesday, July 4 at noon, and goes until Sunday, July 8 at 9PM. There will be many great blues bands of local & national renown throughout all five days/evenings on all three stages, plus the workshop stage. The Front Porch Stage will have the only dance floor, and will be dedicated mostly to dance music all week. The fest attracts about 20,000-25,000 people each day…..so, it is quite large. The fire marshal closes the gates each day when the crowd exceeds capacity. The only way to be certain to get in, even if the gates are closed, is to purchase an advanced five-day pass. I will soon send out information on how to make a special contribution in support of zydeco & Cajun music at the fest in order to get a five-day anytime entry pass.

I think this addresses all the questions I received the past two days. YA GOTTA COME–IT”S ONE OF THE BEST FESTIVAL’S IN THE COUNTRY
