Greetings Zydeco Friends!
Well, the next stop for ZTT will be Mardi Gras coming up in February 2012. We all hope you can make it with us.
You might be wondering where and why Mardi Gras started. Well, the folks here at ZTT did a little digging into the history of Mardi Gras and came up with the following:
Origins of Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, the French for “Fat Tuesday” have quite a few names. While the English used to call it Shrove Tuesday, or, later as Pancake Day, to the Germans it is Fastnachtkuchen, or, just Fastnacht. We have all hard of Carnivale. This can be regarded as the mother of Mardi Gras traditions. However, around the middle of the second century traditions of the Carnivale became popular as a way to feast and act wild before the somber days of Lent. This is still celebrated as a splendid festival across South America and in the Catholic countries of Europe.
Mardi Gras first came to New Orleans through French culture in the year 1699 when the French explorers celebrated the holiday on the Mississippi River. In 1827, some young men who came back from completing their education in Paris introduced recent French ingredients to the event.
The name Fat Tuesday comes from the custom of parading a fat ox through the streets of Paris on Shrove Tuesday. Another explanation given is that the French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent.
The Symbolism of Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras festivals emphasize feasting and excess just before the fasting of theChristian Lenten season. Occurring on the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, Mardi Gras is usually a processional celebration. Through towns and countryside alike, masked and costumed participants revel in rituals of chaos that include reversals of the social order. Men dress as women, women as men; the poor as rich, the rich as poor; old as young, young as old; black as white, white as black. Costumed as clowns, monsters, movie heroes, historical and political figures, the colorful and noisy celebrants sing, dance and play the fool with abandon. Behind the anonymity of masks, les Mardi Gras mock and ridicule the accepted social structure and push the boundaries of conventional social behavior.
The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors are said to have been chosen byh Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch Romanoff of Russia during a visit to New Orleans in 1872.

Country Mardi Gras
Much has been written about the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, which can be regarded as the most extravagant of all American festivals. It is known world-wide for its unmatched exuberance, lively spirits, and city-wide participation. Its galas, balls and parades equipped with floats and marching bands are a spectacle not to be missed, for sure. But much less is heard about the rural Mardi Gras celebrations (the ones we’ll be experiencing on our upcoming Mardi Gras 2011 tour!), which draw on traditions of a different nature and involve the whole community in revelry and celebration.
The Courir de Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras run) is a traditional rural celebration dating back to the earliest days of settlement. With its roots firmly in the medieval tradition of ceremonial begging, bands of masked and costumed horseback riders roam the countryside “begging” for ingredients for their communal gumbo. “Le Capitaine,” a caped but unmasked captain, leads the riders from house to house where they dance and sing for donations such as chicken, sausage, rice and onions to be used in the gumbo.
The day’s festivities end with a fais-do-do (dance) and lots of gumbo for Mardi Gras revelers.
Mardi Gras is after all a redistribution of wealth and beneath its many layers of exotic behavior lies a serious message of survival which goes back to pre-Christian festivals and ancient rites of passage.
During this festival everyone gives and everyone receives. Reflecting egalitarian values, a story of sharing is told over and over in the course of the day. In one of mankind’s oldest games of trying to fool your closest neighbors and best friends, these masked beggars symbolize anyone who may be hungry. The idea is that when they visit someone, those visited should share. Theft is part of the tension in the drama of this ritual play. There are even occasions of “enforced charity,” when the runners feel that the homeowner is not giving enough.

*Shrove Tuesday, derived its name from the old practice of confessing one’s sins on this day in preparation of the holy Lenten season. The verb ‘to shrive’ means to confess oneself and receive absolution. The three-day period of Sunday, Monday, and Shrove Tuesday, was known as Shrovetide. after which the period of Lent begins.

CAJUN PROVERB OF THE MONTH:
“Words that soak into your heart are whispered … not yelled. ”
From Dana D:
Hi folks..was nice having Mark St. Mary play last week at the Hall..many people like Marks style of Zydeco and they were dancing all night long..was especially nice to see Jason Thierry again..it’s sure strange in some ways to see a kid I’ve known since he was about 7 years old and see where he’s gone to..His wife, Christina, is helping out at the door these days, and once in a while they bring their little one there..Oh, and speaking of which, I have had lots of people ask if kids can come, and my answer is always “SURE”, why not?? I went pretty much everywhere with my parents and have always thought that is the way to go. We have a family vibe at the Hall, it keeps people on their best behavior, and adds something for both the old and new alike..so bring kids along if that is what needs to be done..
Anyway, this Friday we have a dance w/Andre Thierry and Zydeco, celebrating my Birthday and also Veterans Day..it’s the actual day 11/11/11, and as always we will be celebrating and calling out our servicemen and women for the job they’ve done..If you’re a Vet, come down, we’ll give you a nice loud cheer and big THANK YOU, and give you a receipt for a free dance down the road..it’s the least we can do for the wonderful Service they’ve all given..if you can’t make the dance, then go and see if you know a Vet and give ’em a big hug, money, kisses, anything that would show appreciation, for without them, we wouldn’t’ be here..
And w/Andre playing it’s going to be a good night all the way around..Andre is sounding better and better these days, and I’m just lucky he’s always able to play for the party..I’ve always asked people to “Dress to Impress”, and last week had some folks ask me what that meant..Well, what happened 16 years ago when we started this was some ladies asked me what I wanted for my birthday party, and I just happened to say “Good lookin’ ladies w/some makeup, mini-skirts, and pouffed up hair”..well some of them did, and these were women who normally did not do this..SO since then I thought it would just be cool for people to get a little stylin’ workin’..it’s not a big thing at all, just come down and have a good time..Just maybe once a year not wear Cargo shorts…LOL…that’s all..it’s going to be a nice time as again, Andre is the best I’ve heard him play and that’s going on 20 years..Dance lesson at 8:30, music at 9pm..
Some folks have asked about the Zydeco Funkateers coming down..they may or may not make it..depends on the night..if not they have told me they will be in full force next week for the Flames..we’ll just have to see..
Also, for those who wanted to know, we had a very nice write up in Alameda/Oakland Magazine by Andrew Gilbert..There are copies of the article at the Hall, and I’ll get the address in the next email for those that want to read it..there’s some pictures of our dancers as well, nicely done..the whole thing is well-done, and hopefully w/spur new people to come and see what us Zydeco Freaks already know..
Wanted to also say RIP Joe Frazier..Smokin’ Joe was the reason I took up boxing back in the day and he was an idol of mine..There used to be talk going around who was better, Ali or Frazier? Well, I always respected Ali for what he did and his skills, but Joe Frazier again was my guy..the 3 fights they had were legendary to this day, w/the “Thrilla in Manila” arguably the best fight ever..
on another note, what’s up w/the Raiders people?
And I’ll ask again, people have asked if we are doing a New Years Eve dance..I’m working on it, but am welcoming opinions on it..Feel free to contact me here..I have a few things that have to work out to do it, but hey look ok as of now..again, I’m trying to get a gist on this..let me know..I’d appreciate it..
I’ve also had some folks ask me about flatfooting and clogging..well, it turns out that on Tuesday the 22nd, I’ll be doing a workshop for those who want to learn..I’ll cover some of the steps that Thomas Maupin did at the Old-Time Convention and others as well..that will be at 8:30, Nov. 22nd, at the Beat, 8:30 and cost will be $10..taps are cool to bring..
And I’ll see my Wednesday night Class tonight..
How ’bout my Niners People? ‘Nuff said..
Thanks again for all the support and remember to keep on dancing..
Dana D.

From Dick Brainard Portland, Oregon
Blackpot Festival was a blast! For those who have not been, it should be on your calendar for next Halloween weekend. There was a covered wood dance floor, which was packed most of the time. The food being prepared at the cook-off was delicious & plentiful–no tastes, just big bowls, mmm! The music included Cajun, zydeco, swing, blues, jazz, & country. Late Saturday night, it got a bit crazy with people taking their beer onto the floor & jumping around, so I left before the Pine Leaf Boys played at 11 PM. The camp ground was full of tents, & I understand jams went on until sun-up. It was cold at night–brrr. See you there next year!

Ft. Lauderdale Cajun-Zydeco Fest is the weekend of Nov. 11-13. The lineup looks good. If you fly in Thursday, there is dancing at the “Round Up” at 9020 W. State Rd. 84, five miles away, with w.c. & e.c. swing, cha cha, country 2-step & waltz, w/lesson at 8 PM, dancing at 9 PM.
